Add a flourish with a purpose
A flourish should support a readable word, not compete with it. Begin with one controlled extension and leave the main letterforms unchanged.
Take it step by step
- Write a readable word without decoration. Choose one entry, exit, ascender, or descender with enough empty space around it.
- Sketch a single broad oval path in the air before putting it on paper. Use the whole forearm for a relaxed curve.
- Add the extension in pencil. Keep a clear gap between the flourish and nearby letters; accidental near-touches create visual tangles.
- If lines cross, prefer a clear crossing rather than nearly parallel overlap. Keep crossings away from heavy downstrokes where possible, and remove anything that obscures the word.

Write “celebrate” three times. Add only an opening flourish to one and only an ending flourish to another. Keep the plain version as a comparison.
